Perhaps one of the most important tools in any garage is a floor jack. Of course, having a hydraulic lift is nice but they are fairly large and expensive. For home use, most people don’t have the luxury of space for a lift but luckily there is another option. A floor jack is a suitable substitute though and they can handle many repairs like tire repair and rotations as well as oil changes, they are just more practical. They are also relatively affordable with plenty of models to choose from on almost any budget. This article will help break down the best choices available for the professional and home DIY mechanic.
What is special about a low-profile jack and why do I need one? Well, that depends on the type of vehicles you are working on. For lower vehicles such as sports cars, for example, a standard jack may not have the low-level clearances to access the vehicle’s lift points. Some examples are the Chevrolet Corvette and Honda S2000, as both vehicles sit low to the ground from the factory. On vehicles like these, you may only have three inches of clearance and many jacks have a minimum height of four to five inches. As such, a low-profile jack with a lower deck is required and there are models that are just 2-3/4 inches in deck height.
As you proceed through this list you will find that we have marked certain products the best in their respective price ranges such as, “Best Under $100”, “Best Under $200”, “Best Under $300”, and “Best Overall” to better help you choose the right low profile jack for your price range.

Here Are The Best Low Profile Floor Jacks
1. Sunex 6602LP Low Rider Steel Service Jack
Key Specifications:
- Weight and Material: Steel, 104lbs
- Load Capacity: 2 tons
- Lift Range: 2-3/4” to 24”
- Warranty: 1-year
- A low-profile 18” long deck is perfect for vehicles with limited ground clearance
- 24” maximum lift height
- Can reach full height without a load in just 7 pumps
- Complies with all ASME PALD safety standards, has an overload safety valve that prevents use above its rated capacity
- Around $235
This is one of the best choices due to its long, low-profile deck and 24” maximum lift height. Anyone who has worked in a tire shop can relate and the 2-3/4” minimum height makes this a versatile jack that can lift sports cars and SUVs. It features heavy-duty steel construction and was built with durability in mind. The dual pumps make it easy to set up with little effort.
Being designed with the professional in mind, the Sunex 6602LP complies with all applicable industry safety standards and has a built-in overload valve that prevents use above its 2-ton rated capacity. Another feature is a two-piece, quick release handle which makes it easier to store. While built for shop use, the Sunex 6602LP is ideal for the home mechanic as well. With its impressive 24” max lift, this is a versatile tool that can be used on a wide range of vehicles. Not to mention the low-profile chassis extends for 18” which will let you access just about any lift point on the lowest of cars.
With that said, the only complaint here is the 2-ton load capacity and the fact it weighs 100lbs. This is not the most portable jack out there and will not roll very well on rough or gravel surfaces.
Aside from that, if low clearance, durability, and a high lift range are important the Sunex 6602LP is probably one of the best jacks for the money especially in terms of its extended low-profile deck and high lift range.
2. Performance Tool W1645 (Best Under $300)
Key Specifications:
- Weight and Material: 100lbs, Steel
- Load Capacity: 3.5 tons
- Lift Range: 3-1/2” to 20-1/2”
- Warranty: 1 year

One of several brands of the Wilmar Corporation which was founded in 1971 and based in Renton, WA. They offer a wide variety of tools for the automotive professional. As such, it’s not uncommon to see PT products in a shop near you.
Another solid option that was built for shop use is the Performance Tool W1645. It has an impressive 3.5-ton lift capacity which is the highest rating of any jack reviewed. Like the Sunex 6602LP, it has an extended low-profile deck although the minimum clearance is slightly higher at 3-1/2”. However, that is more than sufficient to reach under most vehicles. The max lift height of 20-1/2” is good and in the upper range of the jacks reviewed here. As previously mentioned, being able to lift 3.5 tons means this jack can lift just about any car or truck making it ideal for a busy shop.
In addition, the rubber padded, swivel saddle provides some added grip and helps keep the load stabilized. Other safety features are an overload valve that prevents use beyond its maximum capacity. The frame is built out of heavy-duty steel which means the W1645 was made to last. This should not be surprising as it was designed with the professional in mind. The only downside, which is not surprising, is the fact it weighs 100lbs. Other than that, this is a solid choice that was built to last and is worth considering when a higher load capacity is needed.
3. K Tool International 63908A 2-ton Aluminum Floor Jack
Key Specifications:
- Weight and Material: Aluminum, 42lbs
- Load Capacity: 2 tons

Since 1984, K Tool International has been focused on selling tools for the automotive professional with an emphasis on durability and affordability. Like Performance Tool, their products are a frequent sight in many shops today.
The K Tool International 63908A low-profile floor jack was also designed with the professional in mind. While its 2-ton load capacity is low, especially in the $200 and up price range, it makes up for it in terms of weight. This aluminum jack weighs a mere 42lbs which is half that of a comparable steel constructed unit.
As K Tool products are usually marketed towards automotive shops, the 63908A features a dual-pump design for quick lifting and complies with all ASME and PASE safety standards. Additional features are a padded handle and a rubber-coated saddle that protect the vehicle from damage. Side handles aid in placement and makes it easier to carry. The two-piece handle can be easily removed, making it easier to store and transport.
This jack is one of the best choices out there for a mobile mechanic or for home use where lugging around an 80lb steel jack is not practical. This is also one of the most durable aluminum models out there, evident by the fact K Tool backs it up with a 2-year warranty which is better than most jacks reviewed. The only complaints are the 2-ton load capacity and the $200 price tag. However, unless you need to lift 3 tons, the 63908A is the lightest professional-quality jack out there.
4. Torin TCE ATZ830026XU Hydraulic Ultra Low Profile (Best Overall)

Another option where durability is important is the TCE ATZ830026XU, with TCE meaning Torin Commercial Equipment. There is no doubt it was built for professional use. There is a lot to like about this 3-ton jack, aside from its durable construction and reasonable price. Load capacity is good and lift range of 3-1/8” to 20” is decent which makes it a good choice as a shop jack. The dual-pump pistons allow it to reach working height within a few pumps. Lastly, the 3-1/8” minimum height enables the TCE ATZ8300 to get under most vehicles.
As this was designed for shop use, it has a full range of safety features like a built-in overload valve that prevents use beyond its rated capacity. Large steel casters aid in movement and placement under the vehicle. Like the K Tool jacks, this is a quality product that was designed to last and is backed up by a two-year warranty. As with most steel jacks, it is heavy due to the high-quality construction but if you want something to last this is about as good as it gets.
5. JEGS 80077 Professional Low-Profile Floor Jack
Key Specifications:
- Weight and Material: Aluminum, 58lbs
- Load Capacity: 3 tons
- Lift Range: 3-1/2” to 19-1/4”

Based out of Ohio, JEGS remains a family-owned company and is well-known in the automotive parts business for being a “one-stop” shop for all your automotive needs.
More known for selling performance parts, the JEGS 80077 is another solid option where portability is important. It features an aluminum chassis and weighs in at 58lbs, which is not the lightest, but lighter than a comparable steel jack. Lift range is decent with a minimum clearance of 3-1/2” and a maximum of 19-1/4”. It also features a wide 4-9/16” rubber saddle that helps stabilize the load and won’t damage the underside of the vehicle. A long 50” two-piece handle with knurled grip ensures a good grip. Lastly, side handles on the chassis facilitate placement and make it easy to carry.
The JEGS 80077 was also built with safety in mind and has a bypass valve that will not allow operation beyond its maximum rated lift capacity. The sealed hydraulics prevent contaminants from entering and damaging the pistons.
Overall, the JEGS 80077 is a solid jack where portability and lift capacity is important. Able to lift 3-tons, that is about the best of any aluminum jack on the market. It has a good range of safety features and if you need the extra lift capacity or portability, the JEGS 80077 is one of the best buys out there.

This XL3000A has a good set of features that makes it a popular choice among professionals and home mechanics alike. This jack was designed with safety in mind and features an overload valve that prevents use beyond its rated capacity. Wiper seals on the pistons prevent dirt from getting into and damaging the hydraulics.
The load capacity of 3 tons is on the upper end for a low-profile jack and the maximum lift height of 19-1/4” is decent as well.
All said and done, this is a solid shop jack with good safety features and it is nice having that extra confidence when working on your vehicle. It is durable, built to last, and reasonably priced. If quality is important, the Arcan XL3000A is definitely worth the money.

Lift range is good, from 3-1/2” to 19-1/4” and a large, rubber padded saddle ensures a good grip while raising the vehicle. As expected, there is a focus on safety with a reinforced lift arm and overload valve that prevents use above its rated capacity. A padded handle protects the vehicle and side handles aid in placement and transportation. Like the K Tool aluminum jacks, this is one of the better choices out there for durability. If portability and safety are important, the Arcan ALJT2 should be on your list of considerations.

Key Specifications:

It is also reasonably priced and one of the best buys for the money. Not to mention, it was also designed with safety in mind and meets all applicable industry safety standards. Another feature is a safety bar that locks the jack in place when fully extended.
Lift capacity is decent at 2 tons and the maximum height of 15-1/2” is a bit on the lower end so this is not going to be the best choice for use on SUVs or trucks. However, if you need a jack that can lift the lowest vehicles and costs less than $150 this is one worth considering.

- Around $120
Another offering by well-known jack manufacturer Torin, the Big Red low-profile jack is one of the smallest and lightest models in the $100-200 category weighing just 39lbs. Featuring a high-quality aluminum construction this jack was designed with portability in mind. The chassis side handles aid in placement under the vehicle and makes it easy to carry.
What makes this jack a good choice is its size and lightweight. While not the lightest, it is less than half the weight of most steel jacks. In terms of portability, there are not many options under $200 which is what makes the Big Red Low-Profile jack appealing. This is a perfect tool to take to the track when you need to change out your wheels or make some last-minute adjustments.
The only drawbacks are the low lift capacity of 1.5 tons and a 14” maximum height. However, that is more than sufficient for most repairs on a sports car but not the best for larger vehicles or trucks. While it is well-built, this was not designed for shop use. For a home mechanic who wants something small and portable, the T815016L is a good choice.
11. K Tools 2-ton 63105A Low Profile Jack

- Around $180
The Sunex 66175FASJ was designed with portability and professional use in mind. The aluminum chassis weighs a mere 40lbs and this is the only model that features a folding, telescopic handle for easy storage and transportation. What this means is, unlike most jacks that have a two-piece handle this one just retracts inside and folds down. A hook locks it in place so it serves as a handle to carry the jack as well.
The rapid rise, dual pistons enable the 66175FASJ to reach maximum height in five pumps. The lift range of 3-1/2” to 16-1/2” is decent considering it was designed for portability. The load capacity of 1.75 tons is sufficient to lift most vehicles but will not be enough for larger trucks or SUVs.
If portability is the main factor in deciding which jack to buy this one is worth considering. Sunex tools were designed with the professional in mind and for a mobile mechanic where space is limited this a good choice. It works equally well for home use with its folding handle and compact size making it easy to store and move around.
Likewise, if you need a jack for track day and don’t have the luxury of having a trailer to haul your race tires and gear this will work for you. This is a well-designed jack and as previously mentioned, it is one of the best in terms of portability and build quality. The only complaint is the price as it is a bit expensive when compared to other models with similar specifications but for quality and versatility, this is definitely one to consider.

This is a good budget jack or OEM replacement being that it is small and lightweight. However, keep in mind this was not designed for heavy use and was intended for light-duty repairs like changing tires or oil. This is to be expected for a jack in this price range. With that said, if you need it for light use and are on a limited budget, the Big Red 825051 is worth a look.
20. Liftmaster 2.5-ton low profile jack
Key Specifications:
- Weight and Material: Steel, 29lbs
- Load Capacity: 2.5 tons
- Lift Range: 3.15” to 14.5”
- Warranty: 3 years on the hydraulics, 1 year
- Good basic jack
- Decent lift capacity
- Portable
- Around $65
This is another good budget option with similar specifications to the Big Red 825051. The Liftmaster also has a 2.5-ton load capacity and has a low-profile clearance of just over 3”. Max lift height of 14.5” is decent for a jack of this size and price range.
Other features are a safety valve that prevents use beyond its rated capacity and a 3-year warranty on the hydraulics which is usually the most common problem with a floor jack. Weighing in at just 29lbs, it’s lightweight and has a handle for easy transportation. The Liftmaster is another good option if you are looking for a budget jack for light use.
21. Pittsburgh Tool 1.5-ton Compact Aluminum Jack (Best Under $100)
Key Specifications:
- Weight: 27lbs
- Load Capacity: 1.5 tons
- Lift Range: 3-1/2” to 13-7/8”
- Warranty: 90 days
- Aluminum construction
- Lightweight
- Good budget jack
- Around $90
Probably the best compact jack out there for under $100. While similar in weight to the Liftmaster and the Big Red 825051 at 27lbs, the Pittsburgh Tool compact jack is a bit sturdier with a larger saddle. It also features a padded foam handle to protect the vehicle. Lift height is a bit low at 13-7/8” and the same can be said for the load capacity of 1.5 tons. However, for the money, it is comparable to other aluminum jacks over $100. Do not expect to do any heavy lifting with it but if you own a smaller car and want something portable with decent features on a budget you can’t beat the value for the money.
Buying Guide
What are some things to consider when purchasing a floor jack?
This is probably the most important factor to consider and largely depends on the vehicles you are working on. In terms of low-profile jacks, most have a capacity between 1.5 to 3.5 tons. If you just need it to work on your 2000lb stripped-out, race-ready Honda hatchback a 1.5-ton jack will be sufficient.
However, for a busy repair shop, 1.5 tons is not going to be adequate and something with a capacity of 2 or 3 tons is recommended. Places like tire or performance shops that work on a wide variety of cars some things to keep in mind are good clearance and higher load capacity. The same could be said for a home mechanic who owns a Corvette and an SUV. A higher capacity jack can be used for both vehicles depending on the max weight instead of owning one for each vehicle.
Generally speaking, a floor jack should have a lift capacity that is greater than the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Granted you are not lifting the entire vehicle at the same time, a jack with a higher load capacity will raise a vehicle with less effort and offer a bit more stability handling the load. Also, most jacks have a bypass valve that prevents use beyond their rated capacity.
Lift Range of Floor Jack
Like load capacity, this mostly depends on the type of vehicle(s) you will be working on and the type of work being done. For routine tasks like changing tires, brakes, or oil changes lift range is less important. However, if you need to get under the car and need some extra clearance, a model with a higher lift range is ideal.
For use in an automotive shop, this is more important as you are working with a wider range of vehicles like trucks or SUV’s that are higher off the ground. As for the jacks reviewed here, 24” is the maximum lift range.
Construction and Material of Floor Jacks
Most jacks are made of steel or aluminum. With that said, even on aluminum jacks, some components like the handle or hydraulics are made of steel depending on the model. Obviously, steel is heavier, cheaper, and more durable than aluminum. The average weight of a decent steel floor jack is usually going to be between 80-100lbs as opposed to an aluminum model which will typically weigh half that.
For a shop jack that is going to see regular use, steel is usually preferred for durability. However, it is not uncommon for a shop to have an aluminum jack for doing some roadside repairs and some of the higher-end aluminum models will hold up quite well. For home use, an aluminum jack will usually provide years of trouble-free service. Steel of course will last a lifetime but as noted, they are quite heavy and not designed with portability in mind.
Parts Availability
With proper maintenance and care, a floor jack should last a lifetime. While most of the models reviewed are built to last, parts can wear out or break. Some of the more common wear items are the rubber saddle (if equipped), the foam padding on the handle, and hydraulics. Some of these parts can be expensive, especially the seal kits. Not to mention, they may not be available separately. If you plan on using your floor jack regularly you may need to replace these items more frequently. Therefore, it is worthwhile to check the price and availability before purchasing a jack.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to work on a vehicle supported by a jack?
No. While it is not recommended many people (myself included) have used a jack only to do a quick job like changing a tire. With that said, a jack is intended to lift a vehicle, not support it for an extended period of time. Also, under no circumstances should you go under a vehicle that is not supported by jack stands. The load can shift and cause the vehicle to come crashing down on top of you causing serious injury or death.
Aluminum vs. Steel low profile jack?
This is a commonly debated topic, should I get an aluminum or steel jack? For shop use, steel is preferred as it is more durable and will take the abuse better than aluminum. It is not uncommon to see steel floor jacks with 20 or more years of use. However, steel jacks are heavy and do not roll well over rougher surfaces like gravel or grass and they are not very portable. If it will just be staying in a garage, these are not major issues.
For home use, aluminum is generally sufficient and with proper care, it should last a lifetime. While there are some designed for shop use such as the K Tool 63098A, for the most part, the weight savings come at the expense of durability. An aluminum jack is a good tool have in the shop but it is not designed for daily use. They are useful for a mobile mechanic or doing a roadside repair.
I just bought a new jack, is there anything I should check?
The first thing to do is check for any physical damage. This goes without saying as there are quite a few 1-star reviews complaining the jack arrived with damage. This should not be surprising as all it takes is one fall to break something. Therefore, it is advised to do a quick check of the frame, axles, cracks around the welds.
Where are the floor jacks made and are there any made in the USA?
The models above are made in China. However, that does not mean they are of bad quality or that you should be hesitant in buying one. We all know China gets a bad rap for making cheap products but manufacturing standards have improved considerably. I would not be hesitant about buying a jack just because of where it is manufactured as they are all quality products.
As for made in the USA, there are several that are manufactured here but unfortunately, none fit the criteria of a low-profile jack which is the focus of this review.
Floor jack maintenance and care
While a floor jack is a tool to do maintenance on your vehicle, they require maintenance themselves, and below are a few tips to ensure trouble-free use for years to come.
Cleaning and oiling: It is best to not let dirt or grime build up on the jack. You do not need to use any special cleaners as wiping it down with a damp rag will do for the body. As for greasing, the casters, pivot points on the lift arm, and lifting mechanism should be periodically lubricated to prevent damage.
Bleeding and Changing the Fluid: Many times if a jack struggles to lift a vehicle, takes more effort to do so, or does not hold a load there is a good chance the fluid level is low or needs to be bled. If it is not low, the problem may be due to air trapped in the piston. On many newer jacks, this usually involves removing the fill plug, turning the handle to the left to release the pressure, and then pumping the jack several times. It should be noted, you may have to do this several times to remove the air.
As for changing the fluid, it is recommended to do it once a year for jacks that see routine use like in a shop. Otherwise, every other year is fine.
If the low level is due to a leak, chances are you will need to rebuild the piston. For many jacks, there are seal kits available and they vary in price by model. Some can be fairly expensive so it is best to check the price and availability before buying a jack.
Inspection: This goes without saying and prior to use a quick physical check should be done for any physical damage or leaks. Some things to verify are: are the axles straight, are there any cracks on the frame, lifting arm, or welds, is it leaking hydraulic fluid?
If there is any physical damage, I would strongly advise replacing the jack. Saving a $100 isn’t worth risking your life over.
Storage: This should seem obvious as jacks were not designed to be stored outside. Like most machinery, water and dirt will damage the components, especially the pistons. Also, when not in use, it is not a bad idea to keep the jack covered.
Final Thoughts:
The models listed above are all good options in their respective price categories. Since this review is centered on low-profile jacks, there are some brands that have been left out. As for the best, it comes down to the use and type of vehicles you work on. For a busy repair shop where durability is important, the Arcan, Performance Tool, Torin Commercial Equipment, and K Tool models are great choices. In addition, most are available in 2 and 3-ton models with similar specifications.
For home use, I prefer aluminum for portability and there are some really good quality models out there. I don’t have a covered garage so I have to haul mine outside when working on my car. Likewise, aluminum jacks will generally last a long time if you maintain them regularly. In my opinion, there is not much need to spend over $200 for a jack unless you need something heavy-duty or an aluminum jack that can lift 3 tons.
With that said, in the $200 and up category there are several models to choose from. The Sunex 6602LP is probably the best choice for a tire or performance shop where you may frequently work on lowered vehicles. It has the best clearance of all jacks reviewed, not to mention a long 18” low profile deck. This is perfect for reaching lift points that may not be accessible with other jacks. The Performance Tool W1645 is another option worth considering since it has decent clearance and can lift 3.5 tons which is the highest of all jacks reviewed. The Arcan XL3000A and Torin TCE 830026XU are solid choices as well.
For aluminum jacks, while the K Tool and Arcan jacks are well-built, I personally would not recommend either as a primary shop jack as they do not hold up to regular use as a steel model. However, they are useful to have, especially if you need to do a roadside repair or haul the jack out to the parking lot. Anyone who has lugged a 100lb shop jack on asphalt or gravel knows what I am talking about.
In the $100-$200 price range, there are quite a few models to choose from. For shop use, the Arcan XL20 and K Tool 63105A are excellent values for the money. As for the aluminum offerings in this category, the only one I would recommend is the Sunex 66175FASJ, mainly for its portability. That does not mean the others are bad, they were designed more for home use.
For home use, there are plenty of options to choose from in this price range and all are more than capable for your needs. The Powerbuilt 620479E is a good value for the money and can get under most vehicles. If you do not need the higher load capacity, the Torin 815016L is probably the best budget aluminum jack in this price range costing just over $100. For 3-ton jacks, the Liftmaster is a good budget option if you need the extra capacity.
For the under $100 category, there are only a few choices out there and none of them were intended to be used in a shop. That does not make them bad, they were just meant for light repairs where you do not need to get under the vehicle. However, they are portable and like some of the smaller aluminum jacks, they are good for taking to the track where you need to do a quick tire change. They are also good replacements for an OEM scissor jack, are compact, and usually do not weigh over 30lbs.
The Pittsburgh Tool 1.5-ton compact jack is the one to beat at this price if you do not need extra load capacity. If not, the Liftmaster and Big Red 825051 have similar specifications and both will do.
With that said, the goal of this article is to assist you in deciding which low-profile floor jack is best for your needs as there are several to choose from in each category. The models reviewed here were chosen on the basis of quality, durability, features, and value for the money.
